She's reported on various sports for major publications all over the world. The time she worked working at The Washington Post was spent with multiple Olympics, Grand Slam Tennis, football and basketball. In 2004, Nichols moved on to ESPN for a nine-year run during which she was awarded two Emmy Awards and appeared on several of the network's top frequented shows such as SportsCenter and NFL Countdown. The Monday Night Football coverage as an official reporter was a one of the areas she worked for the network. The next step was CNN and Turner Sports. During this time Nichols reported on TNT's NBA broadcasts which included regular season, playoffs and All-Star broadcast teams. Her work on behalf of TBS also included golf and baseball coverage as well as Final Four broadcasts by CBS. It is the only nomination for this award to a woman from the more than 200 nominees contestants.
